There was little to choose between the two teams in the early stages, but Eintracht began to assert their authority from the 20th minute onwards without managing to make the most of several goalscoring opportunities.
Prasnikar cancels out Zicai opener
Lara Prasnikar was quickest to the rebound after Geraldine Reuteler’s shot was saved by Rafaela Borggräfe in the 33rd minute, but the Slovenian’s follow-up effort struck the post after taking a minor deflection of Freiburg’s Lisa Kolb. The home side responded by taking the lead at the other end, Cora Zicai sending a long-range effort into the net to make it 1-0.
However, the Eagles deservedly restored parity shortly before half-time when Prasnikar swept home a loose ball following a corner.
Late goals decisive after Anyomi effort
A magnificent counter-attack gave Niko Arnautis’ side the lead in the 63rd minute. Laura Freigang did well to find Reuteler, whose ball into the penalty area was prodded home by Nicole Anyomi.
Carlotta Wamser spurned a golden opportunity to make it 3-1 in the 89th minute, before Freiburg capitalised on two defensive errors to snatch a dramatic 3-2 victory courtesy of goals from Lisa Karl (90’+1) and Leela Egli (90’+2).
Despite the defeat, Arnautis’ side remain second in the Women’s Bundesliga table after Matchday 17.
Niko Arnautis: “We had the chance to make it 3-1 early on, then in added time we conceded an equaliser almost out of nothing and then another one right after that to make it a 3-2 loss. We simply can’t allow that to happen. We need to realise that it’s our fault that we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. It’s a really bitter pill to be going back home empty-handed.”
