Both sets of supporters were treated to a gripping cup battle at the FC Bayern Campus. The home side shaded the early stages, although they were unable to find a way through a well-organised Eintracht back line. Bayern’s defence proved just as difficult to break down, though, with Elisa Senß’s long-range effort in the 37thminute the first proper chance of note for Niko Arnautis’s troops.
Eintracht take the lead
With 11 minutes of normal time remaining, Laura Freigang swung a cross into the Bayern penalty area which was missed by Geraldine Reuteler but diverted into her own net by Carolin Simon to give the visitors the lead.
Bayern level late on
Bayern restored parity in the 90th minute, however, as Klara Bühl sent a hopeful ball into the box and Jovanna Damnjanovic nodded home to force extra time.
Hosts clinch extra-time win
The home side took the lead for the first time in the 93rd minute. Glodis Viggosdottir made it 2-1 after the Eagles were unable to clear Momoko Tanikawa’s delivery, before Tanikawa herself fired home from long range 11 minutes later to make it 3-1.
The battling Eagles threw everyone forward in the second half of the additional 30, but they were caught out by a late counterattack which ended in Damnjanovic netting Bayern’s fourth, confirming Eintracht’s exit from the competition.
Head coach Niko Arnautis: “We were incredibly close [to winning] in 90 minutes - we were just a couple of minutes away. It was an intensive contest with a lot of passion. There were moments when Bayern had more of the game, but we also had periods of possession. We’re very frustrated we couldn’t see out the final seconds to win the game. That said, we showed again that we’re getting closer and aren’t that far off. We’re incredibly sad today, but I can be proud of my team.”
