Defeat in Munich

Eintracht Frankfurt Women suffered a 2-0 loss at league champions FC Bayern Munich, meaning the battle for European qualification will go down to the final matchday.

The opening period was evenly balanced in Munich, but Niko Arnautis’ side fell behind in the 12th minute when Klara Bühl crossed into the box from the left and found Arianna Caruso, whose shot into the bottom right-hand corner left Lina Altenburg no chance.

Opportunity for Freigang

Eintracht very nearly equalised in the 21st minute when Laura Freigang released Geraldine Reuteler, whose return pass from the byline gave the forward a close-range header that was well saved by Bayern goalkeeper Maria Luisa Grohs.

It remained a closely fought battle until the half-time whistle, but the Eagles lacked the necessary incision in the final third and went into the break 1-0 down.

Harder doubles the lead

The home side extended their advantage early in the second half. After Eintracht struggled to clear a corner, the ball came to Pernille Harder, who headed in from 11 metres out.

Woodwork to the rescue

Bayern nearly found the net again in the 68th minute, but Linda Dahlmann’s long-range effort struck the crossbar. The hosts subsequently seized control, and although Frankfurt continued to battle, they were unable to find a way back into the game and ultimately lost 2-0 in their last away fixture of the season.

Race for Champions League qualification

The result leaves Eintracht third in the standings going into the final matchday of the campaign, meaning that they can secure European football once again for next season at home to 1. FC Union Berlin.
