Laura Freigang put Niko Arnautis’ side in front in the 16th minute, but Eintracht’s failure to convert subsequent opportunities meant they had to settle for a narrow one-goal advantage at half-time.
Second-tier side Leipzig made it 1-1 through Marlene Müller eight minutes into a hard-fought second half, before Müller stunned the Eagles again by putting the home side ahead with two minutes left to play. There was no way back for Arnautis’ troops, whose DFB Cup campaign came to an end.
Head coach Niko Arnautis: “We’re extremely disappointed. I can hardly put it into words. Obviously we pictured things going differently today. We had more chances and good opportunities to win the game but ultimately we didn’t do some of the basics we need to do out on the pitch. We shouldn’t have allowed them to hit us on the counter at the end, so we’re largely responsible for our own downfall today. We need to learn from this.”
