Defeat against Wolfsburg

Eintracht Frankfurt Women led on two occasions but ultimately lost 4-2 against VfL Wolfsburg at Deutsche Bank Park.

13,500 fans flocked to Deutsche Bank Park to witness an intensive, high-calibre match over 90 minutes in which Niko Arnautis’ charges caused VfL Wolfsburg plenty of problems with their fierce pressure and high pressing. Laura Freigang opened the scoring in the ninth minute from the penalty spot, but Alex Popp equalised for the visitors just before the half-hour mark following a mistake in the Eintracht defence (28’).

Dunst on target

Barbara Dunst restored the Eagles’ lead early in the second half (46’) but Wolfsburg grew increasingly strong and levelled once again through Lena Oberdorf’s long-range effort (53’).

 

Defensive lapses decisive

A little while later, Joelle Wedemeyer was afforded time and space outside the area to line up a shot, which she smashed in under the crossbar to put Wolfsburg 3-2 up (73’). Ewa Pajor struck in the 84th minute to put the seal on the She-Wolves’ win on Matchday 2 of the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga season.

Niko Arnautis: “For us, it’s a shame that we didn’t get any points. Our performance in the first half was exactly the way we wanted to play. We should have controlled the game after going 2-1 in front. We didn’t defend well for their goals, but I’m still convinced that if we play the way we did today in our upcoming games then we’ll pick up points again.”
