The Eagles travelled to Sand in what was their third league fixture in a week, but suffered their first defeat of the 2020/21 season with a 3-2 loss on Matchday 6 of the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga.
After Marina Georgieva put the hosts ahead on the quarter-hour mark, Eintracht forward Laura Freigang equalised with her eighth goal of the campaign in the 39th minute, leaving the teams level at the interval. Freigang unstoppable Frankfurt emerged with great purpose for the second half and took a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute through a superb Freigang free-kick.
However, some lax moments allowed Sand to get back into the game, and goals from Dörthe Hoppius (77’) and Chiara Loos (80’) ultimately earned the home team all three points.
Niko Arnautis: It’s hard to find the words after a defeat like that, because we were clearly the dominant side over the 90 minutes. We knew beforehand that we would have to play in a very clear and structured way and not give our opponents any opportunities, so I can’t understand how we could have let the game slip through our fingers in the space of three minutes. Things like that are annoying, and we have to chalk them up to experience. We were naïve and that means that we’re going home empty-handed – and that’s really frustrating.
