Victorious on the road

Eintracht Frankfurt Women kept their European hopes alive with a 2-1 win at MSV Duisburg.

Sensational start

Niko Arnautis’ charges roared out of the traps at MSV Duisburg on Sunday, Nicole Anyomi opening the scoring in the first minute of the contest before Barbara Dunst converted Laura Freigang’s cross to double Eintracht’s lead with just four minutes on the clock.

The visitors dominated the rest of the half against the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga’s bottom side, who created precious little in the final third – but there were no further goals before the interval.

Duisburg pull one back

Freigang was denied by the left-hand post in the 58th minute, before Eintracht goalkeeper Stina Johannes failed to get a touch on Vanessa Fürst’s corner and the ball sailed inside the far post.

Duisburg improved after that, but Dunst, substitute Remina Chiba and Shekiera Martinez all missed good opportunities to put Eintracht 3-1 ahead. However, Arnautis’ team survived a tense finale to claim three valuable points.

Head coach Niko Arnautis: “We’re really pleased that we won the match. After they reduced the deficit, it got a bit hectic at the end. Prior to that though, we’d got off to a very good start and quickly took a 2-0 lead, and after that, we were the stronger team in all respects. Unfortunately though, we couldn’t add to our lead, which would have made things easier for us. Once again, we had enough chances to score more goals, so things didn’t have to be as tense as they were.”
